If you haven't shopped for kitchen bar stools lately you won't believe the wide variety of styles that are available today. Bar stools were once used mostly in bars, restaurants or pubs so choices were limited, but the popularity of kitchen islands and breakfast bars has had the positive effect of giving homeowners tons of great options when choosing bar stools for the kitchen.

Regardless of your decorating style or your household budget, or whether you need kitchen counter bar stools or you are looking for kitchen breakfast bar stools you should definitely be able to find the perfect bar stool for your kitchen.

KItchen Bar Stool Heights

Just in case you didn't know bar stools come in several different heights. The most popular height is known ,amazingly enough, as bar stool height. The seat on these stools is somewhere around thirty inches from the floor and is made to be used with bars that are approximately forty two inches tall.

The other bar stool height that is used most often in the kitchen are counter height bar stools. These are made to work with the common kitchen counter height which is three feet. Some bar stools are available with adjustable height, if you purchase these make sure they adjust to the height you need. While there are taller bar stools, they are usually not used in the kitchen. If you need kitchen island bar stools, be sure to measure the bar height before you make your purchase as a stool made for counter height bars won't work for a bar that is taller than counter height.

Do You Want Bar Stools with Backs and Arms?

There was also a time when bar stools were simply that-stools-a seat with no back. Not anymore, if you want a backless bar stool, there are many available, but a bar stool with a back is much more comfortable. Another option with a bar stool that has a back is to have arms as well. If you decide you want arms on your bar stools, remember that the stool will generally be wider so it will take up more bar space. If bar space is tight you might want to choose armless bar stools so your family won't feel crowded.

Do You Want Bar Stools That Swivel?

While not all kitchen bar stools swivel, many do. Swivel bar stools can be backless or have backs and/or arms. If you want a swivel seat that spins all the way around, you will be limited mostly to the backless bar stools. Most kitchen bar stools that have backs swivel only part of the way, with what is commonly known as memory swivel. What this means is the seat turns and then returns to the position is was in before swiveling, usually facing the bar.

Bar stools are manufactured in many different woods and in several different metals in an endless array of styles. From retro bar stools to to country kitchen bar stools and everything in between, no matter what you want or need. If choices are limited in your local area, take a look around online and you will most likely be able to find what you consider the perfect kitchen bar stools for sale.

I have been looking for a bar stool with a back to use at the workbench in the garage. So far everything I have seen is wobbly and poorly made, but I have only been looking at places like Home Depot. I think I may need to just build what I want myself. Anyway - good info, thanks!

Make sure you measure the height of the bar before you buy a bar stool and if your stool swivels and has arms make sure to take this into account so you don't mark the bar when turning.
