A Farmhouse Table for Your Kitchen

There are a few furniture pieces that many people consider as classics because they have been used for generations in one form or another. A farmhouse table is, in my mind, one of these classic pieces of furniture.

A large farmhouse style kitchen will usually be a favorite gathering place for both family and friends and that kitchen just wouldn't be complete without a large farmhouse table. One of my earliest memories is visiting my great grandparents and sitting in the kitchen around their oak farmhouse dining table eating the homemade goodies my Great Grandma had made. When I think of a farmhouse kitchen, her kitchen always comes to mind.

If you are not familiar with the style, a classic farmhouse table is rectangular in shape with an apron of sorts that frames the bottom of the tabletop. Many of them will have drawers built into the apron for storage. The legs can be straight and plain or carved and turned.

You will often find farmhouse table legs that are painted while the top of the table will be lumber with a waxed finish. Another style that many people like is the farmhouse trestle table. Instead of having a leg on each corner, the trestle table has a braced frame that holds up the tabletop.

If your idea of a dream kitchen is a cottage, rustic or country farmhouse type of kitchen, you have lots of company. These and several other decorating styles incorporate elements that I have always called rustic elegance. The popularity of these decorating styles show that many other people enjoy these looks and farmhouse kitchen tables work wonderfully with these all of these decorating styles.

You will find brand new farmhouse table and chairs from many different manufacturers in a range of prices to fit almost any budget. Many of the many modern reproductions are manufactured to have that patina that comes from loving use through the years.

If you can find one and your budget allows, an antique farmhouse table will add an authentic touch to your kitchen. I found my farmhouse table in a local antique shop and fell in love with it the moment I saw it. The legs are painted and the top is wide waxed pine planks.

If you cannot find one or an antique is out of the question, there are also many manufacturers that use reclaimed and recycled lumber for their products which gives you that antique look and a unique farmhouse table all while helping the environment.
